The research seminar aims to analyze examples of Swiss modular buildings dating from the 1940s to 1970s using diverse empirical material. The main focus is on the interaction between built and social/ cultural structures: how do social relations and living conditions during post-war modernism impact on the building process and how does the built environment retroact on society?
Final presentation open to all – visitors welcome!

The aim of this elective course is to sensitize students about the specific urban development and housing challenges in the Global South. The concept of adequate housing will be introduced as an analytical framework to assess the viability, effectiveness, sustainability and cultural appropriateness of different housing strategies and participatory methods. A number of invited lecturers will present their projects or field research-based case studies from a number of countries including Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil and India.

This public lecture series focuses on the role of housing cooperatives in the provision of affordable housing and liveable neighbourhoods. It will be opened by Prof. Dr. Christian Schmid with a lecture on «100 years of Housing cooperatives in Zürich: from a pioneering model of urban development to a laboratory for urban living» to be followed by a number of invited lecturers associated to the housing cooperative movement in Switzerland.
