Profit Versus Sustainability: Assessing Financial, Emotional and Cultural Values in Housing

Today’s call for sustainability and protection of resources provides decision-makers in the housing sector with a new challenge: how is it possible to bring together the ruptured and triangulated relationship of use, finance and sustainability. In Europe, the main task of the twenty-first century is no longer to develop new housing structures. Rather, questions of heritage, maintenance and the handling of the existing housing stock require more and more attention. In particular the large volume of built structures from the post-war period, which is characterised by mostly poor building standards, now requires renewed investment, whether through renovation or replacement. New sustainable strategies of dealing with the existing stock – in a way that surpasses the ideological battles and mono-perspectives of previous times – must be a main concern to architects and planners at present.
